The best looking floors begin long before the first board is laid. In Queensland’s variable climate, the two biggest risk factors are surface flatness and hidden moisture. Get these right and the finished floor looks better, feels quieter and lasts longer. Skip them and even premium boards can disappoint over time.

Concrete slabs need a clean, sound surface. We remove contaminants and weak layers, then correct highs and lows with diamond grinding or levelling compound so the slab meets tolerance. Moisture testing is recorded using calibrated meters. Where readings are high or a slab is less than 12 months old, we install a compatible vapour barrier to manage moisture migration. This is especially important on coastal blocks or in low-lying areas where moisture ingress is more likely.

Surface prep also involves checking porosity. Dense slabs may require primers to promote adhesive bond. Loose or dusty screeds are not suitable for direct installation without remediation. We test each area and adjust methods accordingly. It’s not just about meeting a standard, it’s about giving your floor a stable foundation that lasts.

Timber and particleboard subfloors require a different approach. We re-screw sheeting to joists to remove creaks, replace damaged or delaminated sections and add bracing where we find flex. A squeak is a signal that the structure is moving and movement causes premature wear. In older properties, we assess underfloor ventilation and recommend improvements if humidity builds beneath the house.

Levelling compounds provide a smooth, continuous surface that improves adhesive contact and acoustic damping. Without proper flatness, flooring boards may sound hollow or move unpredictably over time. We use moisture-tolerant levellers where required, especially in high humidity or areas prone to seasonal change.

Before installation we confirm ambient temperature and humidity are in range, set expansion allowances at all perimeters and agree on plank direction, transitions and trims. We also assess door clearances and cabinetry heights to avoid late-stage modifications.

The result is a subfloor that supports the entire flooring system visually, acoustically and structurally. This upfront work protects your floor and your warranty and prevents costly callbacks later.
